8:00 – 8:30 am: Arrival and Registration

8:30 – 10:00 am: "Alcohol and Other Drugs: Barriers to Student Success" with Tara Phillips

Workshop Description: This workshop will discuss current drugs of abuse as well as specific youth drug trends. Drug categories will be described along with signs and symptoms associated with them. Paraphernalia will be shown both in person and through photos to help participants better identify how students are bringing drugs into school districts. Participants will be able understand the impact of social media and its influence on the culture of drug and alcohol abuse. This workshop will help to provide clarification of treatment law and how that intertwines with educational law as well as treatment options that are available.

10:15 – 11:45 am: "It's a Different World- Teen Technology, Social Media and Mental Health" with Ryan Klingensmith

Workshop Description: This training defines social networking that educators should be aware of and listening for with student’s. The presentation will review social media behaviors related to:, drug and alcohol, eating disorders, self-harm and suicide. The most current social media sites such as Instagram, Tumblr, Kik, Snapchat and After School will be defined and youth culture and mental health practices on these sites/apps will be discussed. This presentation will raise the awareness of youth culture on the internet and how adults can communicate and educate with youth to be responsible digital citizens

12:30 – 2:00 pm: "Legal Update on Issues Impacting SAP Teams" with Erin Gilsbach

Workshop Description:  This session will focus on current legal trends that will assist SAP Teams as they work with their students and parents.

2:15 – 3:45 pm: "Introduction to the Suicide Prevention Online Learning Center" with Perri Rosen

Workshop Description: This interactive presentation will overview the Pennsylvania "Suicide Prevention in Schools and Colleges Initiative," before reviewing training and awareness resources available through the project. Participants will be introduced to the Suicide Prevention Online Learning Center, a new training resource developed to support educators, mental health professionals, and community members with increasing their knowledge and skills pertaining to youth suicide prevention. Additional resources available through the website, including facilitator guides, will be previewed.

3:45 pm - 4:00 pm:  Wrap up and evaluations

Continuing Education Credits

PASAP is an Act 48 Approved Provider. Participants can earn up to 6 hours of Act 48 credit (full workshop attendance). Morning Session only: 3 hours.  Afternoon session only: 3 hours. Participants must provide their Professional Personnel ID (PPID) number when registering and must be present at each session in its entirety to receive credit.  Additionally, 6 hours of social work credits will be offered through the University of Pittsburgh.  A $10 fee for the social work credits will be added at the time of registration.

Speaker Bios

Tara Phillips is the Community Programs Coordinator for Gateway Rehab in Pennsylvania.  She has experience working with the mental health system providing intensive case management services as a certified High Fidelity wraparound Facilitator for the most at risk adolescents for out of home mental health placement.  Prior to working in Mental Health she worked in the social service system monitoring foster care placements and ensuring the safety of those placed outside of their traditional home.  She also has provided intake assessments and safety risk assessments for juveniles involved in the justice system entering into inpatient drug and alcohol treatment at Gateway Rehab.  Tara has been trained in Drug Recognition and identification helping her to better educate others on signs and symptoms of drug use.  Her 13 years of experience working within different social service systems has led her to her current job as a Commonwealth Student Assistance Lead Trainer for Gateway training school districts on the Student Assistance Program.

Ryan Klingensmith has been working with children and teenagers with mental health concerns since 1994. He has held roles such as therapist, supervisor and clinical director in several residential and outpatient settings. He is a licensed professional counselor (LPC) and is a nationally certified counselor (NCC). He currently works as an outpatient therapist and a Prevention Specialist. He is the cofounder of Shape The Sky, a training agency dedicated to helping parents, educators and counseling professionals learn to effectively communicate and educate youth to be digitally responsible citizens.

Dr. Perri Rosen is Project Director of the Garrett Lee Smith Youth Suicide Prevention grant, a SAMHSA-funded grant awarded to the Pennsylvania Office of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services (OMHSAS) at the Department of Human Services (DHS) in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.  This grant is focused on suicide prevention awareness, training, screening, and intervention for youth ages 10-24 throughout the Commonwealth.  She is also Nationally Certified School Psychologist (NCSP) and a Pennsylvania certified Special Education teacher.  Additionally, she sits on the Executive Board of the Association of School Psychologists of Pennsylvania (ASPP), and she is a certified trainer in Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR) and Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA).

Erin Gilsbach is an experienced speaker at the state and national levels on issues regarding Education and Education Law, Erin Gilsbach is the Director of Professional and Policy Development, an attorney with the PA-based law firm of King Spry Herman Freund & Faul, and a founding member of the Greyfriars Institute, a nonprofit affiliate entity dedicated to providing quality professional education in the area of school law to educators and school leaders. She provides legal representation and/or professional development to over 150 Pennsylvania schools. In her practice, Atty. Gilsbach emphasizes a proactive approach to legal defensibility for schools by helping them to create procedures, administrative regulations and board policies that are developed not only upon consideration of statutory and regulatory requirements but also the best practices and common pitfalls found within the facts of applicable case law. Voted a Rising Star Attorney by her peers in Superlawyers and Philadelphia magazines for the past three years, Atty. Gilsbach serves as President-Elect of the PA School Boards Solicitors Association. She began her career as a public high school English teacher. Prior to joining King Spry and the Greyfriars Institute, she served for over two years at the Pennsylvania Department of Education's Office of Chief Counsel.
